English

The study of English is central to the learning and development of all young Australians. It helps create confident communicators, imaginative thinkers and informed citizens. It is through the study of English that individuals learn to analyse, understand, communicate and build relationships with others and with the world around them. The study of English helps young people develop the knowledge and skills needed for education, training and the workplace. It helps them become ethical, thoughtful, informed and active members of society and plays an important part in developing the understanding, attitudes and capabilities of those who will take responsibility for Australia’s future.

Reading
Daily 5 and CAFÉ Reading
The Daily 5 structure includes Read to Self, Work on Writing, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading and Word Work. Essentially students are building their independent stamina for reading, enhancing their passion for reading and working independently towards personalised goals. The teachers meet individual needs of students through whole-group and small-group instruction and 1:1 conferring. At Bayswater West, we focus on students' reading comprehension, our staff have created a PDF text which outlines our approach to reading. The book can be read by clicking HERE.

Writing
Big Write and VCOP
The aim of Big Write and VCOP is to bring fun into writing, but also provide continuous challenge. Through writing tasks (Big Writes) completed in class, both the teacher and student identify together the steps needed for continual improvement, based on the student-friendly writing continuum. We aim to scaffold the learning so that students become articulate thinkers, speakers and writers.

In conjunction with Big Write, students are immersed in the learning of the main four areas of writing VCOP – Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers and Punctuation. You may even find some of your children demonstrating the moves of “Kung Fu Punctuation” which is an activity to support the understanding of the various punctuation components for writing.
